Protective Orders
Victims of stalking, harassment, and assault may be eligible for several options. Please consider talking to an advocate about any of the following:
Letter of No Contact: This document clearly states to the perpetrator that they are not welcome to contact you in any way. This document is sent through certified mail and filed as evidence.
Temporary Restraining Order (TRO): This is a court order requiring a person stay away from the victim and places that the victim may be. This can also include children and/or other family members. Though TRO's are only effective for 20 days after being served, this can serve as a "cooling off" period and may then turn into a Permanent Restraining Order.
Permanent Restraining Order: Within 20 days after the TRO has been served, a hearing will take place to see if there is sufficient reason to keep the Restraining Order in place. The judge may order this in place for several months up to several years. |
